John D. Otis, PhD

I am a licensed Clinical Psychologist in Newton MA with over 23 years of experience providing therapy to help individuals cope with a variety of mental health concerns. My goal is to help people to learn skills that will enable them to challenge negative thinking, approach avoided situations, effectively manage stress, and achieve their goals.

I completed my PhD at the University of Florida in the Department of Clinical and Health Psychology in 2000 and I have been practicing in Boston, MA since 2002.

In addition, I am a Research Associate Professor at Boston University in the Department of Psychological and Brain Sciences and Director of the Behavioral Medicine Program at the Center for Anxiety and Related Disorders (CARD) where I train graduate students to deliver evidence-based CBT treatments. I also teach courses at the undergraduate and graduate level at Boston University. I have worked for the Department of Veterans Affairs since 1999 where I help Veterans who have experienced anxiety, depression, medical illness, pain and trauma.

I have specialized training in Cognitive-Behavioral Therapy (CBT) and other evidence-based treatment approaches to help individuals who are experiencing anxiety, depression and other conditions including:

  • Panic Disorder
  • Specific Phobias
    • Fear of flying, animals, and driving (interstate driving, tunnels, and bridges)
  • Generalized Anxiety Disorder
  • Chronic Pain Management
  • Obsessive Compulsive Disorder (OCD)
  • Cognitive Behavioral Therapy for Insomnia (CBT-I)

Brief and Intensive Treatment Options

For patients who would like to gain skills for managing their anxiety more quickly, I also offer a brief and intensive treatment program which allows for the development of skills at a faster rate. Please reach out to me for more information.

Treatment for Patients Across the Lifespan

I have experience with with clients of all ages, from children in elementary school to older adults adults. Every person has different goals, and I tailor treatment to the specific needs of each person I work with. I teach people ways of challenging negative thoughts that are interfering with their life, and implementing behaviors that are consistent with their overall goals.

Having worked in academics for all of my career, I am well aware of the various types of pressures that students can experience as they strive to succeed. I often work with middle school, high school, and college students who need help learning skills to manage academic pressures, anxiety and stress. I have experience working with students who are preparing to go away to college who could benefit from learning some additional skills for managing the social and academic pressures that they will experience when they move away from home.

Rates:

$300 per 50 minute session

Insurance:

Although I do not accept insurance, I am able to provide invoices of all appointments that can be used if you would like to submit for reimbursement from your insurance company.

Appointments are 50 minutes in duration
